Statement by Women of Substance on International Women’s Day

Each year on 8th March, we take time to celebrate the achievements of women not just nationally but globally. We acknowledge the many contributions that women make in society.  We honour those who have fought against Injustice and lobbied for change, for the survivors, the liberated, the empowered women in our midst.

We acknowledge the many contributions that women make in society.  We honour those who have fought against Injustice and lobbied for change, for the survivors, the liberated, the empowered women in our midst.

This year 2024, the theme for International Women’s Day is, “Inspire Inclusion”. As an organization, Women of Substance believes that we can all do our part to form a more inclusive society for all women,  where any woman regardless of her age, race, religious beliefs, economic status, skills, political affiliation or educational background can receive the assistance she needs to feel safe and free from harm.

We want to encourage increased domestic violence awareness at every stage of a woman’s life. We wish to acknowledge the voices of those women who are discriminated against and create platforms for those who have been silent for too long. We want all women to understand that no matter who they are or the hardships they have faced, that they are valued. We want to join with other NGOs, government agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses and individuals who recognize that to build a future free from violence we must include women in the discussions at every level. When women feel that they are being heard, that they are a significant part of the solution and that they matter, they become stronger and more empowered.

As an organization that supports victims of domestic violence, we want to inspire women from every walk of life as we address gender-based violence awareness and the negative impact it has on our society. We encourage you to join us as we try to create economic empowerment and help improve the quality of life for survivors.

Feel free to participate in funding initiatives that are geared towards providing safe spaces for women and children who are affected by domestic violence. We urge you to encourage and promote healthy relationships in our communities from the young to the old. We implore you to lobby for change in our workplaces or where there are inadequate law enforcement policies and poor practices in the judicial system which aid in the loss of lives due to domestic violence. As we inspire each other and appreciate and include the efforts of all our sisters, we can strive together to create a better world for women and girls.
